Connecting the NPD Process to the Supply Chain

Currently NPD processes leave pallet design to the final stages of pack development. The result is a pallet which is not optimized for the supply chain, meaning less efficiency in warehousing, less efficiency in transport, greater handling costs, more pallets than needed in the supply chain and an increased risk of damage to product. A process that does not challenge constraints in the supply chain does not enable sustainability, cost and process optimization for either the producer or the retail customer.

Designed and developed by James Ross Consulting to deliver a new, more efficient and collaborative way of working in this area by putting packaging decision making at the front of the NPD process, enabling transparent decision making for the end to end supply chain.

The Design Tool

The design element of the tool takes a basic input – the rough dimensions of the concept and an idea of possible collation size. The software will then develop the optimized size for the primary pack, propose the optimum collation format and recommend pack orientation to ensure a solution is identified that maximizes the efficiencies in the supply chain. The tool allocates a direct value to each of the options generated thus enabling companies to make informed design and logistical decisions before any tooling is produced. Similarly, a CO2e value can be shown which also ranks the sustainability impact of the various options proposed by the tool.

Complex Calculations

PackDevPro runs upwards of 1 trillion calculations to generate outputs in under 10 seconds. As a web based platform the tool can be run on any web enabled smartphone, tablet or laptop, meaning that solutions can be generated in real-time, potentially during creative meetings / marketing ideation sessions. PackDevPro is a new way of working – connecting engineers, marketing, designers, logistics, finance and production teams in a seamless way, ensuring that new packs meet the needs of the supply chain. James Ross Consulting have used PackDevPro with clients in India (using the tool to map truck loading in a market where pallets are not used), the USA and Europe to map current supply chain constraints, build parameters (and challenge constraints which can be easily eliminated for net business gain) and to define projects which have delivered savings of over US$20MM in the past two years.
